Bon Festival - Morikami Japanese Gardens
I attended this festival last evening. It is a Japanese festival that traditionally spans three days during the summer. It is called Obon which symbolizes a time when the spirits of deceased family members are believed to return for a brief visit back to this realm. It is a bittersweet celebration. On the last night of the occasion, the ancestors are believed to depart for the other world, their journey illuminated by farewell fires, which may take the form of simple paper laterns floated on bodies of water (the photos you see here). I did one for my dad. I could not find my latern once the volunteers placed the plethora of illuminated boats in the water, but I know I expressed the sentiments shared by all the others, which I was able to capture with my camera: I love you and I miss you. I wondered how many people, like myself, say it more now than when their loved ones were alive. It is a hard and humbling lesson to learn, and this is a beautiful way to express it and make up for it.
On another note, I was a bit disappointed on the quality of the photos. I need to take a night photography class. Night time is a bish especially if the objects are moving! :0 Have an amazing Sunday, everyone!
